How do I fire with fewer kiln sections on my Jupiter Kiln?

The outlets are numbered on the side of the control box. In this example below all the outlets are assumed to be numbered 1-5 top to bottom, or 1-4 top to bottom or 1-3 top to bottom.

To Fire with 5 sections (Up to Cone 10)

  1. Regardless of the numbers on the kiln sections' power cords, plug what's now the top section into outlet #1 on the control box.
  2. Plug the upper-middle section into outlet #2.
  3. Plug the middle section into outlet #3.
  4. Plug the lower middle section into outlet #4.
  5. Plug the bottom section into outlet #5.
  6. TC wire with the little #1 on the end of it goes to whichever thermocouple is now in the top section. TC 2 wire goes to the middle section, and TC3 wire goes to the bottom section.

To fire with 4 sections (Up to Cone 10)

  1. Remove a section with no thermocouple in it.
  2. Regardless of the numbers on the kiln sections' power cords, plug what's now the top section into outlet #1 on the control box.
  3. Plug the upper-middle section into outlet #2.
  4. Plug the lower middle section into outlet #3.
  5. Plug the bottom section into outlet #5 or the bottom outlet, but not the powered bottom outlet if there is one.
  6. TC wire with the little #1 on the end of it goes to whichever thermocouple is now in the top section. TC 2 goes to one of the middle sections, and TC3 goes to the bottom section.

To fire with three sections (Up to Cone 10)

  1. Remove the sections with no thermocouple in them.
  2. Regardless of the numbers on the kiln sections' power cords, plug what's now the top section into outlet #1 on the control box.
  3. Plug the middle section into outlet #2 (or #3).
  4. Plug the bottom section into outlet #5 or the bottom outlet, but not the powered bottom outlet if there is one.
  5. TC wire with the little #1 on the end of it goes to whichever thermocouple is now in the top section. TC 2 goes to the middle section, and TC3 goes to the bottom section.
  6. If the control box only has 3 outlets, put the top section in outlet #1, the middle in #2, and the bottom in #3.

To fire with two sections (Up to Cone 5 or so)

  1. Remove the sections with no thermocouples in them if any and one of the sections with a thermocouple too.
  2. Regardless of the numbers on the kiln sections, plug what's now the top section into Outlet #1 on the control box.
  3. Plug the middle section into outlet #2.
  4. TC wire with the little #1 on the end of it goes to whichever thermocouple is now in the top section. TC 2 goes to the bottom section, and TC3 gets coiled up carefully out of the way. TC 3's display will read FAIL but just set it to show TC1 or TC2. See the DynaTrol TC programming note below.

To fire with one section (Up to Cone 02 or so)

  1. Remove the sections with no thermocouples in them, if any, and two of the sections with a thermocouple too.
  2. Regardless of the number on the kiln section, plug the section into outlet #2 on the control box.
  3. TC wire with the little #2 on the end of it goes to whichever thermocouple is now in the section. TC1 and TC3 get coiled up carefully out of the way. TC 1's and TC 3's display will read FAIL but just set it to show TC2- see DynaTrol TC programming note below

NOTE: In addition, the DynaTrol can be programmed to recognize only the thermocouples that are being used. Rather than just letting it read FAIL in the display for the unused TC circuit(s) you can enter the following sequence to program the DynaTrol to use one, two, or three TCs: When it says IDLE, Press the following: OTHER/ 4/ 4/ 3/ ENTER/ press the number of TCs being used; 1, 2, or 3, then press ENTER. To switch it back, enter the same sequence with the appropriate number of thermocouples.
